How to Learn UI Design When You Can't Draw

"I can't even draw a stick figure" is the most common excuse I hear from people who'd secretly love to design interfaces. Here's the good news: UI design and drawing are barely related.

Interface design is about spacing, hierarchy, contrast, and consistency. It's closer to organising a tidy room than sketching a portrait. You're deciding what's important, giving it room to breathe, and making sure similar things look similar.

Where to actually start

Pick an app you use every day and copy one screen of it, pixel for pixel, in a free design tool. Don't invent anything yet β€” just rebuild. You'll start noticing the invisible decisions: why that button is that size, why there's exactly that much space around the text. That noticing is the skill. The drawing was never the requirement.
